It is bordered by the counties of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, and Staffordshire. The county town is Leicester. Rainfall is moderate throughout the year, with an average of 740 mm (29 in) per year. Snowfall is occasional but not heavy.
